1. SUMMARY. Progress report on the X-20 Dyna-Soar piloted orbital glider by C. B. Hargis Jr. of the Air Force Aeronautical Systems Division, presented at the Second Manned Space Flight Meeting in Dallas in April 1963.

2. BACKGROUND. The program began in November 1957 as a joint Air Force and NASA effort to extend the X-15’s research to orbital speeds. Boeing’s glider and Martin’s booster won a 1958–59 competition. Booster plans moved from the Titan I to the Titan II and then the Titan III.

3. FINDINGS. The glider weighed 12,250 pounds, was 35.3 feet long, and had a radiation-cooled metal structure. Single-orbit flights would launch from Cape Canaveral and land at Edwards Air Force Base after a 50-minute reentry. The first air launch was scheduled for January 1965 and the first piloted launch for May 1966.

4. DISPOSITION. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara cancelled the X-20 in December 1963, before any flight, and announced the Manned Orbiting Laboratory in its place.
